                           Pearls of Memory

Pearl earrings from her mother.
A symbol of what was;
Hope for what might be.

“The Nazis are coming--
They will rip off your ears!”
The words she heard as she nervously removed her earrings
And threw them under the house.

The war is over;
She survived.
Returning home…
Devastation;
All was destroyed.
Except for the earrings
In the exact same spot.

Nostalgic,
She was wearing those earrings and was swollen with pride
as she walked into her great granddaughter’s bat mitzvah.

My bat mitzvah.
